Upcoming Workshop

Alex Louisa

I have another workshop coming up at Work-Shop Brisbane's new space!

From their website:

Learn the unique mixed media painting skills of Alex Louisa as she takes you through the specifics of how she creates her beautiful works.

Alex will show you tips on holding and controlling your brush, basic colour theory, and how to blend and layer with fluid acrylics and water to create interesting effects.  She will share all the ways you can achieve different textures when you add salt to the mix, and you will learn how to add detailing to your piece at the end using pastel and charcoal. The workshop will finish up with everyone creating their own bird piece!

You can find out all the details and book here!

UPCOMING SHOW: The Polygon Project - Tasmania.

Alex Louisa

The Polygon Project  is a show curated by Laura E. Kennedy featuring 30 female artists from around the world. Each artist was provided with an identical polygon-shaped panel, and it's interesting to see how each artist has used the unusual shape.

I painted some eucalyptus from a piece I keep in my studio, and had to include one of my favourite wrens. It is a male Superb Blue Fairywren in its 'eclipse' plumage - which is how they look before they turn blue to attract the females. Their character is far more mild at this stage.

White Ribbon Day is the 25th of November, and 50% of sales go towards the Anti-Domestic Violence Charity. Pieces will be available for purchase online from November 1st, as well as in person at the exhibition, which runs from November 4th - 13th, at Sidespace Gallery at the Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart. The official opening is from 5-7pm Friday November 4th, and the show will be opened by White Ribbon Ambassador David O'Byrne.

Holmes Art Prize for Realistic Australian Birds FINALIST

Alex Louisa

I'm happy to announce that my piece "A Masked Owl Named Gorilla" is a finalist in the 2016 Holmes Art Prize for Realistic Australian Birds. This prize is in its second year this year - I only found out about it last year 10 days after the closing date, so I'm very excited to be included in this year's show!

I saw "Gorilla" the stunning Masked Owl at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary last year in the free flight bird show, and she absolutely stole my heart. I have painted her many times since, but never before at this scale (90x90cm/36x36") so I relished the chance to really explore the detail in all those incredibly patterned feathers. And I loved painting those feet!

Opening night for the Award is November 2nd, when winners will be announced, and the exhibition runs until November 27th at Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra.
