Our pets are such a special part of our lives, so this is the perfect way to celebrate our furry (or feathery!) family members. I've fallen in love with the Monotype printmaking process, and I would love the opportunity to create a special piece featuring your dog, cat, rabbit, rat, horse, bird - whoever your animal friend is! (Or maybe you've taken a photo of a wild creature that you'd love to see represented in this art form instead?

Original Monotype. Oil-based ink on 280gsm cotton rag printmaking paper.

Image size:  6 x 8" / 15 x 20cm

Paper size: 9 x 12" / 23 x 30cm (approx.)

How the commission process works:

After purchase, please send 1-3 of your favourite photos for me to work from to alex@alexlouisa.com. I will let you know when your piece will be completed. (Currently I only have enough commission spots available so that I can send your piece to arrive before Christmas.)

Please see the listing photos for examples of previous Monotypes.

Optional Add-on:

A bespoke fine art reproduction of your monotype, enlarged to fit on an A2 (42 x 59cm / 16.5 x 23.4 inches) sheet of cotton rag paper. Enlarging the artwork as a reproduction really shows off all the incredible mark-marking that is achieved with this process.

What is a monotype?

A monotype is a form of printmaking which creates an original, one-off artwork.

In my case, the image is painted on an 6 x 8" / 13 x 20cm acetate sheet in reverse. Extra details are added with subtractive techniques (my favourite part!) and the image is then transferred to the thick, soft paper with a printing press. This process creates a beautiful bevelled border on the paper around the edge of the acetate sheet. There is a high risk in this process as there is only one chance to get the image to print correctly, and the print can not be repeated. Hence the name!
